Mudiyettu

Mudiyettu is an old ritual art mainly performed in middle Kerala. It is a combination drama and dance. Mudiyettu means “mudi”(meaning crown) and “yettuka”(meaning wear), so the crown has a great importance in Mudiyettu. An aritst who performs this ritual dance wears crown. Mudiyettu was mainly performed by a goup people called “Karruppanmar”(meaning blacks). It was performed in Kali temple. Mudiyettu has a lot of similarities with Theeyyattu, both of these are performed in order to please the goddess Kali. An artist who performs this dance should have a flexible body, with help of the fire the artist would create a horrifying atmosphere. The story which is mainly performed in Mudiyettu is “Dharika Vadham” (meaning Assassination of Dharika). Mudiyettu is mainly performed in order to avoid diseases.
