ALAPPUZHA also known as Alleppey, is a town in Alappuzha District of Kerala state of southern India. A town with picturesque canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons, it was described as the List of places known as Venice of the East by Lord Curzon. It is the administrative headquarters of Alappuzha District. Alleppey has a wonderful past. Though the present town owes its existence to the sagacious Diwan Raja Kesavadas in the second half of 18th century, district of Alappuzha figures in classical Literature. Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala with the unending stretch of paddy fields, small streams and canals with lush green coconut palms , was well known even from the early periods of the Sangam age. History says Alappuzha had trade relations with ancient Greece and Rome in B.C and in the Middle Ages, as well as with other parts of India.

Alappuzha beach is a beach in the Allepey district of Kerala, India.The beach has a small park nearby. An old lighthouse stands near the beach which is also a curiosity for tourists.Alappuzha Beach is Referred to as the Venice of the East by travellers from across the world, this Backwater Country is also home to diverse animal and bird life. By virtue of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of Kerala.
Backwater Cruise
The Kuttanad region is a vast area of partly reclaimed land, covered with bright green paddy fields, separated by dikes. The level of water is a few feet higher than the level of the surrounding land. It is an amazing labyrinth of shimmering waterways composed of lakes, canals, rivers and rivulets. Lined with dense tropical greenery, it offers a glimpse into rural life-styles of Kerala. Kuttanad is a backwater paradise and an ideal destination for a backwater cruise in Kerala. It is possible to drift along in a houseboat and enjoy the scenic view of the Kerala countryside.
Boatraces
Annual Vallam Kali (Nehru Trophy Boat Race ) is held in the backwaters in the month of September associated with the Onam festival. The main attraction is the Chundan Vallam (Snake Boat) race, in which a number of contestants are in the run for the famous Prime Minister's trophy, a trophy donated by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.
Krishnapuram Palace
is a tourist attraction, just 400 m from N.H.47 located between Kayamkulam town and Oachira. The palace is maintained by the Archeological Department and contains exhibits that belonged to the Palace and its former occupant, the Travancore Maharaja Marthanda Varma. The palace is also famous for a large pond within the palace. It is said that an underground escape route runs from the bottom of the pond as a possible escape route from enemies. The Gajendra Moksham,mural painiting in the palace is the largest in Kerala. The two-edged Kayamkulam Vaal(sword) is also on display here. The palace also houses, in its courtyard, one of the four statues of Buddha in Alappuzha District.

Mullakkal Rajeswari Temple
is dedicated to the Goddess Rajarajeswari. The nine day 'Navarathri' festival is celebrated twice a year and is of special significance to the people of Alappuzha.
Pathiramanal
known as the mysterious sand of midnight, is a small beautiful island of tourist importance. It is situated in the centre of Vembanad lake, 4 km east of Muhamma. This island is full of coconut trees and luxuriant vegetation.
Ambalapuzha Temple
Ambalapuzha is a coastal town besides the NH 47 about 13 km to the south of Alappuzha. The temple of Sree Krishna is located 1.5 km east of the town junction. In the olden days the headquarters of the Ambalapuzha rajahs were near the temple. There was a time when the Ambalapuzha territory had been under the rule of Chempakasseri rajahs. But when Marthanda Varma, the valorous ruler of Travancore conquered Chempakasseri territory in 925 M.E., there occurred a gradual declension of the royal family of Chempakasseri. Some people worship the presiding deity of the Ambalapuzha temple as Parathasarthy while others as Gopalakrishna but both the names of course, are the two sides of the same coin.
Arthunkal Church
is an important pilgrim centre of Roman Catholic Christians and is famous for well known St. Andrews Church, popularly known as 'Arthunkal Church' situated 8 km south-west of Cherthala town facing the sea coast. Hindu pilgrims from Sabarimala used to visit Arthunkal and take bath in a tank in the Church premises to formally conclude their penance. The tank is not in existence now.
Champakulam Church
One of the oldest christian churches in India. Believed to be established in AD 427. Rebuilt many times and the many rock inscriptions found around the church tells us about the history of the church. Once, it was a sub parich cente of the Niranom church which was founded by St Thomas the apostle himself. belongs to the Syro Malabar church of India.
Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, Mavelikkara
Chettikulangara Located about 5 km south-west of Mavelikkara, Chettikulangara is famous for the well known Bhagavathy temple. The important festival in this temple is the Kumbha Bharani festival conducted during February-March. The important festivity associated with this utsavam is "kettu-Kazhcha' which resembles the Chinese festival celebrated on the birthday of Budha. Kuthiyottam is also another important festivity.
Edathua Church
Edathua is a place in Kuttanad, Alappuzha district, Kerala, India.Situated 12km from Tiruvilla town the famous St. George Church which celebrates its feast during the month of May is an important location for the Christian Pilgrims. During this month between the 1st to the 7th people from throughout the state as well as from the neighbouring states visit it.This town is located in Kuttanad. It lies below sea level.
Situated on the banks of the Pamba river, this massive shrine at Edathua- 23 km south-east of Alappuzha, resembles the churches of medieval Europe.The annual feast here starts on the 27th of April with the hoisting of the flag and concludes on the 7th of May. During the feast, the statue of St. George, decked in gold regalia, is carried out and placed on the dais in the centre of the basilica.All the prayers and related rituals are conducted here during these days. Devotees from all parts of the state attend the festival. It is a very important pilgrimage for the people especially from the trivandrum side of kerala. During the 10 day feast, devotees prepare sacred food for the church and take part in the ritual bathing. The colorful illumination is indeed a feast for the eye.
Mannarsala
Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple is a very ancient and internationally-known centre of pilgrimage for the devotees of serpent gods (Nagaraja).The famous Nagaraja temple "Mannarasala" is nestled in a forest glade, like most snake temples. The Mannarasala Temple has over 30,000 images of snakes along the paths and among the trees, and is the largest such temple in Kerala. Women seeking fertility come to worship here, and upon the birth of their child come to hold thanksgiving ceremonies here, often bringing new snake images as offerings.A special turmeric paste which is available at the temple is credited with curative powers.
The temple is located about three kilometers to the south-east of the bus station in N.H.47 at Haripad, in Alappuzha district of Kerala. It is approximately 115 km from Cochin International Airport and 125 km from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.
